The last decade or two have brought us the best science fiction ever written. The author Peter F Hamilton has come up again and again, but I was devouring Anne Leckie, Alastair Reynolds, and Adrian Tchaikovsky. I questioned how it could get better than those authors. So I researched and decided to start reading Peter F Hamilton with the book Salvation (book 1 of the Salvation Sequence). After reading all three books (including Salvation Lost and The Saints of Salvation), I can unequivocally say that they are my favorite books of all time. At this time, I have yet to read any other books of Peter f Hamilton, but rest assured, I’ll read them all.

These books truly begin in the 23rd century on Earth, and follow multiple storylines throughout all three books, some reaching many millennia into the future. The science and cultures in these books are staggeringly advanced and continue to evolve rapidly throughout the book. Some characters are strange and highly alien, but all are accessible and relatable. The key characters are very human; some are struggling with the rapid events, and others are embracing them. The science is dense, but so is the action, keeping the stories moving quickly, even across thousands of light years. The Salvation Sequence explores first contact, interstellar warfare, distributed intelligence, quantum entanglement, advanced weapons development, terraforming, human evolution, socialism vs. capitalism, the criticality of human emotion, and post-scarcity society.

The multiple storylines pick up at various historical points, eventually intertwining, merging, and splitting again. Amazon gives a fair summary below:

Salvation by Peter F Hamilton:
An alien shipwreck is discovered on a planet at the very limits of human expansion – so Security Director Feriton Kayne selects a team to investigate. The ship’s sinister cargo not only raises bewildering questions, but could also foreshadow humanity’s extinction. It will be up to the team to bring back answers, and the consequences of this voyage will change everything. Back on Earth, we can now make deserts bloom and extend lifespans indefinitely, so humanity seems invulnerable. We therefore welcomed the Olyix to Earth when they contacted us.

Salvation Lost by Peter F Hamilton:
In the twenty-third century, humanity is enjoying a comparative utopia. Yet life on Earth is about to change, forever. Feriton Kane’s investigative team has discovered the worst threat ever to face mankind – and we’ve almost no time to fight back. The supposedly benign Olyix plan to harvest humanity, in order to carry us to their god at the end of the universe. And as their agents conclude schemes down on earth, vast warships converge above to gather this cargo.

The Saints of Salvation by Peter F Hamilton:
Humanity welcomed the Olyix and their utopian technology. But mankind was tricked. Now these visitors are extracting a terrible price. For two years, the Olyix have laid siege to Earth, harvesting its people for their god. One by one, cities are falling to their devastating weaponry. And while millions have fled to seek refuge in space, others continue to fight an apparently unwinnable war. As Earth’s defeat draws near, a team attempts to infiltrate the Salvation of Life – the Olyix’s arkship.
