Character Quiz: Discovering Your Calling Through Pop Psychology

by Shannon on Thursday, 1 of February, 2007 at 7:06 pm

If you are anything like me, chances are you’ve spent countless hours pondering your true inner self in relation to the iconic figures of sci-fi and fantasy. Who hasn’t wasted away an afternoon wondering if they could have been Aragorn, Dr. Who, or Spock? Or in the case of us women; the damsel in distress, the Amazon-like warrior, or the earth mother that all women come packaged in when it comes to classic genre fiction.

Well, ponder no more my friends. Thanks to the internet, we can now take multiple quizzes to determine just where we would fit in the grand scheme of speculative fiction.

According to the first test I took here. I am Elrond from Lord of the Rings. Now, I would have much preferred to be someone cooler, maybe Gandalf, or Lady Galadriel, but I’m consoled by the fact that I am; “A stern yet benevolent organizer who often knows best” (someone should tell that to my friends, as I DO always know best) and “Your wits are keenly fixed on aiding the efforts you deem worthy.” Is it a worthy effort to search online for two solid hours to find the complete animated X-Men series?

Out of sheer curiosity, I decided to continue my journey of self-exploration by finding more sci-fi and fantasy related personality quizzes. As I believe Plato said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Of course I don’t think Plato counted the examination of your life as compared to genre characters, but just for the record, I believe Plato would have been an Elrond too.

Here’s an interesting little Star Trek quiz based on the Myers-Briggs personality tests, the epitome of personality tests that are supposedly used by therapists and certain companies when deciding who to hire. Having flat-out refused therapy on a number of occasions (despite the urgings of friends, family and teachers alike), and having cleverly avoided the mundane working world for nearly eight years now, I can’t vouch for these rumors.

My result? I’m an ESTP or Extrovert, Sensor, Thinker, Perceiver. Except for that extrovert thing I agree. Unfortunately, that means in Trek terms that I’m a LaForge, Scott, or Yar. Now, no offense to those very wonderful characters, but Scott is the only one I really liked. LaForge was kind of pathetic in that “woe is me, I can’t get laid” kind of way, and Yar died too soon for me to decide what I thought of her. At least I wasn’t a Troi who–let’s face it–has a penchant for stating the obvious; and spouting off inane, touchy-feely, fortune cookie-like lines when asked for advice. Or even worse, answering a question with a question. I hate that (hence the avid avoidance of therapy).

Here’s another little gem of self-awareness. Which sci-fi crew would you be a part of?

And my answer? The Serenity crew (from the TV show Firefly and movie Serenity) with a whopping 83 percent. I’m not totally sure what this says about me, but according to the site it means I like living by my own rules and nobody but those closest to me better try telling me anything. Is this a good or bad thing? Good I suppose, if you’re a space smuggler living on the fringe, bad if you had high aspirations for government office, or being voted the nicest person in your high school graduating class. (I, by the way, was voted Most Unusual Personality, which, considering I graduated from a high school in the middle of Indiana, was a nice way for my fellow classmates to call me a freak. A title I gladly accepted.)

And just because I was told I would be a part of the Serenity crew I hunted down a quiz to tell me just which crew-member I might be.

My results, Zoe at 73%. I like this answer, as of all the stereotypes I most want to be, it’s the one that’s carrying the weapons.

And finally, the quintessential quiz.

That’s right, folks. Finally the answer as to just how geeky it is to dress as Chewbacca, wear pants up to your nipples, and attend a lecture on quantum physics on a Saturday night when everyone else in the known universe is bar hopping.

And my result (drum roll please):

***Your Geek Profile:***

SciFi Geekiness: High
Academic Geekiness: Moderate
Fashion Geekiness: Moderate
Movie Geekiness: Moderate
Music Geekiness: Moderate
Geekiness in Love: Low
Internet Geekiness: Low
Gamer Geekiness: None
General Geekiness: None

My Gamer Geekiness is none because those 3-D games move around so fast I get motion sick and can’t play them, so I skipped that question. And the General Geekiness questions didn’t apply to me since I’m not really geeky, just eccentric.

Here’s a few more interesting sites I found just for the sheer fun of it.

http://www.deathquaker.org/nettest.html

www.wizardrealm.com/tests/personality.html

Now, somewhere in the middle of taking these quizzes this nagging voice kept informing me how pathetic it is to do this at all. Obviously, no test comprised of a handful of questions and based on television and movies is going to give some insight I didn’t already know about myself. But boy, was that voice wrong. Having taken all these quizzes, I now feel ready to finally write that self-help book I’ve been planning for years; Life, the Universe, and Everything: Finding Inner Peace Through Brain Rotting Entertainment. Feel free to tell me your scores on the quizzes and–much like you did while reading this post–I’ll feign interest.
